Missouri students are making strides, according to the latest data released by the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE). The preliminary results from the 2024-25 statewide assessments were presented at the recent State Board of Education meeting, indicating a year-over-year increase in the Missouri Assessment Program (MAP) scores.

The data includes performance metrics from mandatory state examinations in subjects such as English Language Arts (ELA) and Mathematics for grades 3-8; Science for grades 5 and 8; and end-of-course assessments in English II, Algebra I, Biology, and Government. Optional end-of-course assessments, which cover subjects like American History and Geometry, were also released, as reported by the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education.

With a 98 percent participation rate during this assessment period, Missouri’s education system is witnessing noticeable advancement, most evident in subjects such as grade 8 Science and Algebra I, where students made the most considerable gains. In contrast, some grades experienced stagnation or minor declines, specifically grade 4 in both ELA and Mathematics, and grade 5 in Mathematics.

"This year’s data shows that Missouri is moving in the right direction," Commissioner of Education Dr. Karla Eslinger stated. She acknowledged the ongoing challenge: "There is still work to do but the trendline shows slow and steady progress. We must continue to encourage our students to excel." Dr. Eslinger emphasizes the importance of quality educational programs as the new school year sets forth, to ensure that all Missouri students are provided ample opportunities for success, the DESE noted.
