In an unexpected twist of fate, an Illinois grandfather's second-choice scratch-off ticket turned out to be a life-changing decision. Clarence Neuenkirchen, a resident of southwest suburban Montgomery, won a grand prize of $200,000 playing the Illinois Lottery’s 7X Bingo Multiplier game. According to a WGN-TV report, he bought the lucky ticket from a Jewel-Osco on Orchard Road in Oswego after his preferred $5 Crossword ticket was sold out.
Despite not getting his first choice, Neuenkirchen was quoted in an interview with FOX 32 Chicago as saying, "7X Bingo Multiplier is my second favorite—it feels like a little escape. I can take my time playing it." This serendipitous turn aligned the stars to readily accelerate his fortune, by the simple act of scratching off a seemingly ordinary ticket.
It's not just Neuenkirchen who's overjoyed with the win; his wife shared in the excitement as well. He recounted to FOX 32 Chicago, "I honestly thought she was going to break the floor—she kept jumping up and down!" Celebrations aside, the couple has some practical plans for their windfall. Neuenkirchen intends to invest in his retirement and is setting up education funds for his grandchildren. In addition, the couple aspires to indulge in some travel, with a cruise and a potential trip to France on the cards.
Jewel-Osco, the establishment that sold the winning ticket, stands to benefit too. They are to receive a bonus of $2,000 for their part in this story. The Illinois Lottery, meanwhile, continues to play a significant role in supporting state education and other causes, having contributed over $25 billion in revenue since its inception in 1985. Neuenkirchen's unexpected windfall serves to unintentionally boost not just his own life but also quiet, yet integral sectors of his community.
