A crash involving a Memphis Police Department patrol car left an officer and a civilian hospitalized yesterday after an incident occurred at an apartment complex near TPC Southwind. The collision, which involved the patrol vehicle overturning, happened at approximately 4:32 p.m. on Cart Path Drive at the MAA Southwind Luxury Apartments in Southeast Memphis, according to statements given to Action News 5.
Witness accounts detail the intensity of the crash. Viper McCallen, a local resident, described the sound as "[claps] a full-on impact," likening it to a gunshot. He recalled the immediate response of emergency services, which he said sounded like a gunshot. McCallen told FOX13. Photos from the scene, shared by WREG, show the cruiser overturned with considerable damage sustained.
While the reason behind the crash remains under investigation, MPD Col. Marcus Worthy commented on the possibility of the officer responding to a nearby call about a stolen vehicle at the time of the accident. The officer, however, was unconscious and unable to provide immediate clarity on the situation, as per FOX13. Both the officer and the civilian involved in the crash were transported to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, MPD confirmed.
