A tragic incident unfolded Friday evening on Hickory Hollow Parkway when a 37-year-old woman was struck and killed by a train. The accident occurred between Bell Road and Una Antioch Pike, the Metro Nashville Police Department reported.
Authorities were alerted after the train's conductor noticed two individuals, apparently asleep on the railroad tracks. A companion of the woman reportedly attempted to remove her from harm's way but failed in doing so, and subsequently left the scene before the police arrived. Despite the conductor's immediate action to apply the brakes, the train could not be stopped in time. The incident took place shortly before officers responded to the call at 5:40 p.m., according to the police department.
The victim, whose name has not been released pending family notification, was found deceased upon the officers' arrival. It was a grim discovery in an embankment near the railroad, one that marks a somber reminder of the hazards associated with train tracks.
The man who tried, and failed, to save the woman was gone by the time law enforcement officers reached the location. His identity and relationship to the victim remain unclear, and the circumstances leading up to their presence on the train tracks are still under investigation. Efforts to locate him and further understand the events that led to the tragedy are underway, the police department mentioned.
