The New Orleans Police Department has been making strides in traffic enforcement, particularly in areas plagued by high crash rates. According to a recent New Orleans Police Department news release, from August 3 through August 9, the NOPD Motorcycle Platoon doled out 1,200 citations and oversaw 196 vehicle stops across all city police districts — a concrete response to the urgent calls for safer streets from community members.
In an effort designed as sending a message to reckless drivers, NOPD Superintendent Anne E. Kirkpatrick explained the department's strategy. "Our residents have been clear—they want safer streets," Kirkpatrick said, as reported by the New Orleans Police Department News. She continued, "These results show our commitment to answering that call. We're going back to the basics—visible, consistent enforcement in the areas that matter most. We're seeing progress, but our work is far from done. We will keep the pressure on reckless driving and stay present where our community needs us most."
The efforts of the New Orleans Police Department have not gone unnoticed with statistics to show for their rigorous enforcement. There has been a noteworthy reduction in traffic-related fatalities, with a 17% decrease in crashes and a 15% decline in deaths compared to the same period last year. As of this year, 32 fatal crashes have occurred, resulting in 33 deaths, suggesting that the targeted operations may be making an impact on road safety.
