The New Orleans Police Department (NOPD) recently released its preliminary crime statistics for last week. According to a report published by NOPD News, the data shows a decline in both gun arrests and firearm seizures compared to the same period last year.
In 2025, NOPD has so far made 183 arrests for illegal possession of a firearm, reflecting a significant, 44-percent decrease from the 327 arrests made during the equivalent period in 2024. These arrests are noted under the provision of LA RS 14:95 and related sub-items. There's also been a reduction in gun seizures for the year, with 1,187 firearms taken in criminal investigations by last Monday. This number shows a 21-percent drop from the 1,497 firearms seized in 2024, during the same timeframe.
Although the NOPD has not provided specific explanations for the declines, those involved in community safety may interpret the data as a sign of either an effective strategy or changes in criminal behavior.
