The New York City Department of Education has funneled a substantial $745,000 into a single Brooklyn restaurant over the last fiscal year, raising eyebrows and prompting a response from the city's comptroller. According to AMNewYork, the DOE's considerable expenditure spans across a series of 13 consecutive invoices logged by Fusion East, a restaurant specializing in Caribbean and soul food, between August 28 and September 6, 2024. The spending issues have brought forth concerns regarding oversight on the DOE's financial practices.
The comptroller's office highlighted the steep increase in DOE spending at Fusion East in recent years, jumping from $81,637 in 2023 to $470,686 in 2024, and finally to a neck-craning $745,823 in 2025. Reports by Eater New York reveal that the Brownsville Collaborative Middle School racked up nearly $20,000 worth of Fusion East invoices over a mere two-week period. This marks part of the over $1.4 million total DOE spending on the restaurant since 2016. The DOE has defended this spending trend, aligning it with the city's goal to actively support Minority and Women-owned Business Enterprises (MWBEs).
Despite the DOE's stance, City Comptroller Brad Lander's office has expressed concern about the DOE's lack of mayoral oversight. Sara Azcona-Miller, as stated to amNewYork, highlighted that "when over half a million dollars of taxpayer money goes to a single restaurant, the lack of Mayoral oversight over City agencies like DOE is glaring." Furthermore, Lander's office noted invoices that exceeded the per-person allowed amount dictated by NYC Comptroller Directive #6, suggesting some financial regulations have been breached, as per Eater New York.
To mitigate this situation, the DOE responded that Brownsville Collaborative Middle School had indeed violated certain purchasing regulations, as noted by DOE Chief Procurement Officer Elisheba Lewi in a letter obtained by amNewYork. The DOE has consequently vowed to increase staff training in procurement procedures to prevent future oversights. In addition, they have reassured that a review of future transactions with Fusion East LLC will take place to ensure compliance with the Comptroller's directives.
It's not just the DOE's books that Fusion East is quoted in; the restaurant's popularity continues to soar with the public. Andrew Walcott, the restaurant's founder, is a distinguished figure, with careers spanning the U.S. Air Force, corporate law, and public accounting. This patronage by the DOE shows a noteworthy union of public sector spending and community-supported entrepreneurship, yet one that bristles under the scrutiny of financial oversight.
