Starting on Thursday, North Outer Road 70 near Kingdom City will close temporarily. The closure at Sallees Creek is part of preparations for a major traffic shift on I-70 scheduled to begin later in the week, according to the Missouri Department of Transportation (MoDOT).

As part of the I-70 expansion project, two-way traffic will be rerouted to the outer roads to allow for a large culvert replacement. Beginning Monday next week, westbound traffic will shift to the north side of I-70 and eastbound traffic to the south side, with two lanes open in each direction during construction.

Drivers who typically use North Outer Road 70 will need to follow detours until the project’s expected completion in February 2026. The timeline may be adjusted depending on weather conditions.

The closure is part of the Statewide Improve I-70 Program, which will add an additional lane between Columbia and Kingdom City and improve interchanges. The $2.8 billion project is included in Missouri’s FY2024 budget and covers nearly 200 miles of I-70.

The Missouri Department of Transportation advises drivers to use caution in work zones, follow posted signs, and stay updated through the Improve I-70 Program website and email notifications.
