In a recent turn of events, Sean Finnegan, previously condemned to death row for a murder case, issued a guilty plea on charges of raping two children in Oak Ridge and faces 50 additional years in prison without the possibility of parole. This conviction comes atop his previous death penalty sentence for the murder of Jennifer Paxton, a crime which involved "serious torture and abuse," as described by the District Attorney General Dave Clark. Finnegan's guilty plea eliminated the need for the jury trial that was scheduled to occur on Monday morning, as reported by WATE.
The investigation that culminated in these recent charges against Finnegan began in 2020 when Rebecca Dishman, his ex-girlfriend, sought domestic violence help. This led law enforcement to unearth Paxton's frozen body and evidence implicating that Finnegan and Dishman had raped two children, according to WATE. In addition to the child rape charges, the prosecution pointed out that Finnegan and Dishman committed especially aggravated sexual exploitation of a minor, as Finnegan pleaded guilty to 13 counts of the same. The total sentence will run consecutively with his current death penalty sentence.
As part of these heinous crimes, video evidence was discovered by the authorities, revealing a part of the disturbing acts that Finnegan and his accomplice had recorded. As per WBIR, Senior Judge Don R. Ash voiced the grim details of the case and Finnegan's connection to the sexual exploitation, resulting in the added prison time on top of his existing sentences.
On the other hand, Rebecca Dishman got a life sentence for her role in Paxton's murder after taking a plea deal in September 2023, which allowed her to evade the death penalty, and she will now also face an additional 50 years for child rape. The tragic case witnessed Dishman pleading guilty and swiftly addressing the judge. Both she and Finnegan will be returned to their respective state prisons to serve out their sentences. Throughout the course of this protracted investigation, the Anderson County community has been heavily involved, as District Attorney General Dave Clark highlighted the significance of bringing these perpetrators to justice, relaying that "Today's plea recognizes the additional crimes of Sean Finnegan and Rebecca Dishman committed against these young victims. They deserved justice just as Jennifer Paxton did," as reported by WBIR.
