The fight against illegal sideshow activity in Oakland intensifies as the Oakland Police Department (OPD) clamps down on participants, seizing a significant number of vehicles associated with these events. In a recent announcement, the OPD confirmed that nearly 130 vehicles have been towed this year due to involvement in illegal sideshow antics on Oakland's streets.
According to a statement from the OPD posted on the city's website, the majority of these vehicles, over 80%, are not registered in Oakland. Interestingly, the department's relentless pursuit extends beyond the immediate aftermath of these illicit gatherings. "Just because you got away that night doesn’t mean we won’t find you," the OPD warns.
The OPD's crackdown includes the issuance of 144 seizure warrants for vehicles that fled from the police, were involved in reckless driving, or participated in sideshow-related crimes. "Our investigators continue working to identify those responsible for criminal behavior and participation," said the OPD. They also highlight the thrust of collaborative efforts with law enforcement partners.
The crackdown forms a critical component of the OPD's Summer Safety Plan, aiming to address and halt the sideshow spectacles that have long been a thorn in the side of the Oakland community. The Oakland Police Department remains steadfast in its commitment, stating, "Working together, we can make Oakland safer."
