Two off-duty firefighters became impromptu heroes on Interstate 75 yesterday morning. The firefighters, identified as lieutenants from Broward Sheriff Fire Rescue, encountered a burning car following an accident and took decisive actions that likely saved a life. The incident occurred at approximately 7 a.m. near Royal Palm Boulevard in the community of Weston, as reported by Local 10 News.
According to the Florida Highway Patrol, the driver of a green Dodge Magnum lost control to veered off the road, and collided with a light pole, which resulted in a fire starting. In a statement obtained by WSVN, investigators indicated that witnessing the aftermath, the two lieutenants quickly engaged to put out the flames with a portable fire extinguisher and extracted the injured motorist from the wreckage.
The seriousness of the accident was evident as the driver suffered severe injuries and emergency medical technicians airlifted him to Broward Health Medical Center. His condition was serious, but he is expected to recover from the ordeal. The lieutenants' prompt actions were crucial in keeping the situation from potentially becoming fatal.
Traffic was heavily affected by the incident, with congestion stretching for miles along I-75. After emergency crews managed to clear the scene and investigators performed the necessary on-site work, the highway could reopen to the public. FHP detectives are still trying to piece together the cause of the crash. Despite the chaos, no further injuries have been reported.
