Attorney General Gentner Drummond, chair of the board, highlighted the scope of the initiative: "These grants represent Oklahoma's commitment to fighting the opioid epidemic at every level, from our communities to our classrooms." As per the official announcement, $12.9 million is to be distributed among 31 cities, counties, and public trusts, while 16 school districts have been allocated a portion of the $3.7 million earlier this month.
The grants aim to support a comprehensive approach to addressing a crisis that has affected many lives and placed demands on public resources. Efforts include enhancing treatment and recovery services, expanding mental health support, launching educational initiatives on opioid abuse, and implementing measures to reduce the availability of narcotics throughout the state.
Among the beneficiaries are Cherokee County, Cleveland County, and Oklahoma City, as well as a joint application by Choctaw, Pushmataha, and McCurtain Counties. School districts set to benefit comprise notable names like Norman Public Schools, Broken Arrow Public Schools, and McAlester Public Schools.
