The Oregon Department of Emergency Management (OEM) recently opened its doors to the U.S. Army's 364th Civil Affairs Brigade for an in-depth tour of Oregon's Emergency Coordination Center, as reported by OEM's news release. The July 11 visit aimed to enhance the synergy between military and civilian agencies, crucial for seamless operations in times of crisis.
With its affiliation to the 351st Civil Affairs Command, the 364th brings expertise in bridging the military-civilian divide, a cooperation that is key for effective community support during emergencies while OEM showcased how its Emergency Coordination Center acts as a hub for strategic disaster management and response, and the staff highlighted their operational workflows, and tools to better prepare for, manage, and recover from disasters, the integration of military assets like evacuation support and specialized Search and Rescue units can boost these civilian efforts.
Erin McMahon, Director of the Oregon Department of Emergency Management and a retired brigadier general, underscored the importance of such military-civilian collaborations. "This type of engagement is invaluable for building relationships and understanding each other’s capabilities," McMahon professed in a statement obtained by the Oregon newsroom, adding, "The military brings unique capabilities to the emergency management enterprise from evacuation and response support, to Search and Rescue to Chemical, Biological, Radiological, Nuclear, or high yield Explosive Identification." McMahon believes that incorporating military proficiency into Oregon's disaster response framework will enhance the state's ability to safeguard its residents.
