Traffic in Peoria is set to become more bearable as the city moves forward with the expansion of its Smart Traffic Signal System. The initiative, which leverages Adaptive Traffic Signal Control (ATSC) technology, is aimed at easing congestion along key corridors by utilizing real-time data to adjust traffic signals dynamically. According to a recent announcement from the City of Peoria, this system has already made a positive impact on traffic flow on Bell Road and Olive Avenue.
The technology behind ATSC involves a series of sensors that monitor vehicle movement, such as speed and volume, to optimize signal timing in sync with the current traffic conditions. This advanced approach can significantly reduce waiting times and create a smoother driving experience. Now, Peoria is rolling out these smart signals to additional high-traffic areas: Lake Pleasant Parkway – from 83rd Avenue north of Union Hills Drive to Loop 303, and Deer Valley Road – from 83rd Avenue to 107th Avenue. In total, the project will upgrade 28 intersections with state-of-the-art video detection and adaptive signal processors.
Improvements along Deer Valley Road are presently in the phase of testing and configuration, fine-tuning the adaptive system through a direct engagement with the incoming traffic data. This segment is anticipated to be fully operational in its adaptive capacity by the end of August 2025. The information provided by the City of Peoria emphasizes the expected enhancements, saying, “this results in shorter waits, smoother drives, and fewer traffic headaches."
Meanwhile, Lake Pleasant Parkway's upgrade project is in the early stages of implementation. The City’s Traffic team is collaborating with vendors at this moment to gather and input the necessary timing data. They are set to commence with modeling and testing come September, and they aim to have the traffic management system completely operational by late November 2025. With these developments, Peoria intends to build upon the established success of the ATSC system and ensure a significant improvement in the daily commutes of its residents.
