Empower College Prep recently served as a venue for profound remembrance and affection, as community members, family, and school staff gathered to pay tribute to Rebekah Baptiste, a 10-year-old student whose life was cut tragically short. During the ceremony, the gymnasium was awash in pink, Rebekah's favorite color, reflecting a vibrant spirit remembered by all who knew her.
In a statement obtained by FOX 10 Phoenix, Phenicia Swalley, Rebekah’s fourth-grade teacher, recounted personal moments shared with her student, "I remember when you started coming to school and your hair wasn't brushed. I took you aside, and I asked if I could brush your hair. From that day forward, it became our thing." Swalley's fond memories of Rebekah were echoed by others who described the young girl as a beacon of resilience and joy, despite the troubled circumstances she faced at home.
Javi Casas, a chaplain, was quoted by AZ Family, reinforcing the school's dedication to Rebekah, "Empower College Prep, you did your part. You loved her, you protected her here on campus. You gave her safety, joy and dignity." Rebekah's dream to be a teacher was mentioned during the memorial, with Penny Roubison, her third-grade teacher, telling, "I don't think you become a teacher, I think you’re born a teacher and I think she was born a little teacher." The tribute also revealed tattoos of Rebekah’s initials “R.B.” that are permanently etched on both the principal and assistant principal of Empower College Prep, signifying the enduring impact of her life.
