The community is reeling from the tragic loss of Zariah Dodd, a 16-year-old girl found deceased in Marivue Park. Dodd, identified as being approximately five months pregnant, was honored Friday night at a candlelight vigil, according to AZFamily. The two men arrested in connection with her murder, Jurrell Davis, 36, and Jechri James-Gillett, 18, face two counts of first-degree murder for the deaths of Dodd and her unborn child, Zaloni.
Recent court documents obtained by FOX 10 Phoenix reveal that Dodd had expressed to her Department of Child Safety caseworker that she felt intimidated by Davis, who she identified as the unborn child's father, and was pressured into sexual relations under threat of violence. These allegations surfaced in December 2024, several months before Dodd's untimely death.
On the evening of July 4, Dodd was last seen leaving a Surprise group home with James-Gillett, who later admitted to police that Davis had commanded him to carry out the killing, with the threat of death looming over both him and Dodd, FOX 10 Phoenix reported. Davis, for his part, has denied any involvement in the murder while confessing to knowing about Dodd’s pregnancy.
Richilyn Fox, who had a previous connection with Dodd through a kinship caregiver role after managing one of the group homes she resided in, described the teen as "funny, smart, intelligent, resilient, powerful." Fox questioned the circumstances leading up to Dodd's disappearance during the vigil, noting discrepancies in the report timing and stressing the need for better protections for vulnerable youth like Dodd, AZFamily detailed.
The arrests of Davis and James-Gillett have left the community seeking justice, as both men remain in custody, with the bond set at $1 million each. Moreover, Davis faces an additional charge of sexual misconduct with a minor. Advocates and Dodd’s loved ones continue to seek answers, particularly around safety protocols for at-risk youth, while the judicial process for the accused is currently underway, as per AZFamily.
