Phoenix's culinary landscape is poised for a fresh bloom as the Desert Botanical Garden gears up to reintroduce a revamped dining experience. Celebrity chef Mark Tarbell is slated to take the helm of Gertrude’s Restaurant and Patio Café, promising an infusion of local flavor and garden-inspired refreshments. The garden has been on a bit of a wild ride since the Hause Restaurant Group decided to part ways earlier this year to focus on their catering business, closing the popular eatery and cafe that had been a fixture for over a decade.
According to a news release sent to ABC15, visitors can look forward to "wine and cocktail programming featuring boutique selections from Tarbell’s award-winning cellar," and a menu that evolves with the seasons. The dishes will highlight 'Arizona-grown ingredients and inspiration,' a tantalizing teaser that includes items like Crispy Duck Confit Tacos adorned with toasted pumpkin seed salsa and pickled shallots.
Mark Tarbell, who boasts an impressive resume including James Beard Award nods and an "Iron Chef America" win, is set to reimagine these dining spots within the enchanting environs of the Desert Botanical Garden. With Tarbell's trademark culinary artistry at the forefront, Gertrude’s is expected to marry the serene beauty of the garden with a delectable food experience. The chef expressed his excitement, stating to Phoenix New Times, "The Garden is a global icon, and Gertrude’s is nestled in its heart. I’m honored to bring a fresh, elevated culinary experience that reflects the spirit of the Sonoran Desert and the vibrancy of our local community."
Enhancing the visitor experience, the new Gertrude's aims to serve garden-inspired craft cocktails and an array of wine from Tarbell's renowned cellar. Scott Burdick, the Board Chair of the Garden, couldn't hide his enthusiasm about the partnership, shared with the Phoenix New Times, "It’s the right partner at the right time in the Garden’s history. With Mark’s vision, creativity and award-winning team, we are on the pathway to creating a significantly enhanced food and beverage experience for our visitors.” The projected reopening is set for this fall, followed by the Patio Café's revival soon after, with concrete dates yet to be set in stone.
