The City of Portland is bracing for a sweltering heatwave with temperatures expected to soar into the triple digits. Officials have put forth an Extreme Heat Warning starting from 11 AM Friday to 5 AM PDT Tuesday, citing "dangerously hot conditions with high temperatures of 95-103F and overnight low temperatures of 60-70F possible," as per an alert released by the NWS Watches, Warnings & Advisories.
Expect plenty of sunshine today with afternoon highs reaching near 88 degrees. A light north-northwest breeze will pick up through the morning, blowing at 5 to 9 miles per hour and occasionally gusting up to 18, as reported by the National Weather Service. Tonight, skies will remain clear as temperatures dip to around 61. Winds from the north-northwest will continue at 6 to 9 miles per hour, with gusts reaching up to 20.
Areas anticipated to experience the brunt of the scorching weather include the Greater Portland/Vancouver Metro zone, Western and Central Columbia River Gorge, pockets surrounding Corbett, and the Hood River Valley regions as well as parts of the Willamette Valley and lower elevations of the Northern and Central Oregon Cascades, this according to the National Weather Service's forecast. In urban precincts north of Salem and parts of the Columbia River Gorge, where overnight lows will be particularly oppressive, the mercury won't provide much reprieve from the daytime heat.
Health risks associated with the upcoming extreme temperatures are significant, with warnings about the toll taken on both those outdoors for extended periods and those lacking suitable cooling methods. "Heat related illnesses increase significantly during extreme heat events," the advisory notes. If you’re spending time outdoors, take extra precautions. Wear lightweight, loose-fitting clothing, and try to schedule strenuous activities for the early morning or evening hours. Be alert for signs of heat exhaustion or heat stroke, and take action immediately if symptoms appear.
