In a recent development that underscores ongoing concerns about biosecurity, Chengxuan Han, a PRC citizen engaged in academic research at the University of Michigan, has entered a plea of no contest to charges of smuggling biological materials into the U.S. and lying to customs officials. Han, pursuing a Ph.D. at the Huazhong University of Science and Technology, sent multiple packages containing concealed biological material, including round worms, to individuals at the University of Michigan, a recent statement from the U.S. Attorney's Office revealed. The Justice Department noted the materials were sent throughout 2024 and 2025.
Upon her arrival at the Detroit Metropolitan Airport on June 8, Han was inspected by officials, at which point she made false statements regarding the shipped materials. Investigators discovered that Han had also attempted to conceal her tracks by deleting content from her electronic device three days before her travel to the States. "This alien from Wuhan, China, smuggled round worms and other biomaterials into our country on three separate occasions to circumvent our border protections," U.S. Attorney Jerome F. Gorgon, Jr. commented, as reported by the Justice Department's announcement.
Han's actions have fanned flames of concern among local authorities and federal law enforcement, who stress the importance of stringent safeguards against such unauthorized transfers of sensitive materials. "Protecting the American people from threats, whether domestic or foreign, remains at the core of the FBI’s mission," Acting Special Agent in Charge Reuben Coleman of the FBI Detroit Field Office stated, indicating the gravity with which this case is being treated. Han faces a maximum penalty of 20 years in prison for the smuggling charges and 5 more for making false statements, with sentencing scheduled for September 10, per the Justice Department.
