This Saturday, the San Diego Humane Society is taking a big step towards finding forever homes for its shelter animals by waiving all adoption fees for "Clear the Shelters Day." According to San Diego Humane Society's press release, this special event will take place on August 23, 2025, from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m., offering a golden opportunity for those considering adding a pet to their families.

In anticipation of the event, Dr. Gary Weitzman, the president and CEO of the Humane Society, expressed his enthusiasm: "If you are thinking about adding a pet to your family, we’d love for you to come and meet the incredible animals in our care." He elaborated on the fulfillment of adopting a pet, emphasizing that "There’s nothing more rewarding than giving an animal a second chance — and gaining a loyal companion who will love you unconditionally." These comments were obtained through the organization's announcement earlier this month.

The Clear the Shelters campaign comes at a crucial time when shelters in San Diego and across the nation are overwhelmed with their capacity. Despite the alarming number of pets still needing adoption, over a thousand have already found homes through the Humane Society's ongoing 50% off promotion. As reported by the San Diego Humane Society, 1,139 pets have been adopted so far, yet with approximately a hundred new animals arriving daily, they are still housing a staggering 1,836 creatures.

Adopting a pet during this campaign is a gesture of compassion and a financially savvy move. Every pet adopted comes ready with spaying/neutering, microchipping, and vaccinations, ensuring new owners start on the right foot with their new companions. The organization's adoption centers are accessible for walk-ins and are located in El Cajon, Escondido, Oceanside, and San Diego, opening from Tuesday through Friday between 10 a.m. and 5 p.m., and extending their hours on weekends to 7 p.m. Prospective adopters can sneak a peek at the furry friends awaiting adoption on their website.
