San Diego's public transportation network has a rising star in its ranks with Nicholas A. Sofoul, Director of Strategic Planning and Transit Systems at the North County Transit District (NCTD). Recognized by Mass Transit magazine as part of their "40 Under 40 Class of 2025," Sofoul has been spotlighted for his impactful work and leadership in the public transit arena. This award underscores the young professional's commitment to innovating and continuously improving transportation services for North San Diego County.
Since joining NCTD in 2022, Sofoul has spearheaded ambitious projects to improve the agency’s service significantly. Among these initiatives is the rollout of NCTD+, a microtransit service designed to meet the evolving needs of commuters in the region. In addition, under his guidance, NCTD made the bold move to manage bus operations and maintenance directly, a transition executed to ensure seamless service during the changeover. "Over the past few years the agency has taken on significant projects that have defined the future for North County, and Nick has been an integral part of those successes," said Shawn M. Donaghy, Chief Executive Officer, in a statement obtained by San Diego Railroad.
Sofoul’s career encompasses nearly 15 years of dedicated service to public transportation. An alumnus of the University of Central Florida and Florida Atlantic University, he started his journey at Broward County Transit (BCT) in Florida. During his tenure there, he smartly played a key role in securing dedicated transit funding, launching the county’s Premium Mobility Plan (PREMO), and advancing transit-oriented development strategies.
Upon receiving the distinction, Sofoul reflected on his path and the support system behind his achievements: "I am deeply appreciative of the support of my colleagues, mentors, and leadership at NCTD,” according to San Diego Railroad. “Receiving this honor strengthens my resolve to serve with humility and strive for excellence for our passengers, who are always at the heart of my work at NCTD."
