San José authorities made a bold move against illegal drug sales cloaked in the guise of smoke shops. Four such establishments endured the brunt of the law enforcement's crackdown on corrupt business practices. As reported by the San José Police Department (SJPD), operations named Grizzly's Smoke Shop, E. Side Smoke Shop, JT's Smoke Shop, and McKee Smoke Shop were raided last Wednesday. In a coordinated effort, the SJPD's various units, including the Downtown Services Unit, Metro Unit, Street Crimes Unit, and Violent Crimes Enforcement Team, served search warrants, confirming the community's voiced concerns.
The raids were not a solo effort, as the SJPD enlisted the backing of the City of San José's Code Enforcement, the Division of Cannabis Regulations, and the Santa Clara County District Attorney's Office. These agencies combined forces to ensure all involved parties were held accountable. Together, they managed to seize a substantial haul: 74 pounds of assorted cannabis products, 40 pounds of psilocybin mushrooms, 426 cylinders of nitrous oxide, a cache of $11,000 in cash, and a firearm. Following the operation, five adult male suspects were arrested, with three issued citations and two booked into the Santa Clara County Main Jail on drug-related charges.
San José Mayor Matt Mahan stood in solidarity with the operation, asserting the city's support for genuine small businesses while condemning those that operate under a criminal guise. "This SJPD operation pulled narcotics, hundreds of nitrous oxide tanks, and an illegal firearm off our streets — and we’ll keep going until every bad actor gets the message: we take law enforcement seriously in San José," Mayor Mahan was quoted, per the San José Police Department.
