The San Juan County Sheriff's Office made a significant drug bust over the weekend, confiscating an estimated $1.2 million worth of narcotics. In the early hours of Saturday morning in Blanding, a traffic stop for a routine registration violation quickly escalated into a major seizure. As reported by ABC4 News, deputies with the San Juan County Major Crimes and Drug Task Force utilized their K-9, Nyx, who indicated the presence of drugs, leading to the discovery of about 88 pounds of what is suspected to be fentanyl pills and 5 kilograms of heroin.
During this operation, carried by the scent of potential danger, Nyx, the police K-9, conducted a "free air sniff" of the vehicle and alerted her handler to the odor of narcotics, as detailed by KSLTV. The ensuing search revealed a substantial amount of drugs, totaling around 240,000 fentanyl pills, and the hefty 5 kilograms of heroin.
The driver, whose identity has not been disclosed, was arrested and is currently detained at the San Juan County Jail. The investigation surrounding this incident remains active. As per the statement from the authorities, no further details have been released at the junction in time.
According to KUTV, the street value of these drugs is about $1.2 million, highlighting the significant impact this seizure could have on the drug trade in Southern Utah. Officials said, "The investigation is active, no other information will be released at this time," underscoring the ongoing efforts to address the larger network potentially involved.
