A second newborn has been safely surrendered at the Mehlville Fire House's Safe Haven Baby Box, according to sources from multiple news outlets. The Mehlville Fire Protection District stated the baby girl was placed in the safe haven baby box at around 2:30 p.m. on a recent Sunday afternoon and was found to be in healthy conditions upon evaluation, as reported by First Alert 4.
Installed in August 2023, the baby box located at 5434 Telegraph Road in St. Louis County has now seen two such instances, with the first baby having been surrendered back in February 2024, the fire department responded to the alarm and immediately took the newborn girl to a hospital for evaluation, where she is now in the custody of the Missouri Department of Social Services, according to a FOX 2 report.
Designed as a secure, climate-controlled facility, the Safe Haven Baby Box allows for parents in crisis to safely, anonymously, and legally surrender their newborn children. Once a baby is deposited in the compartment, an alarm alerts onsite trained staff to immediately provide care, this setup ensures the safety and well-being of the child while providing a desperate option for parents, according to details furnished by the KSDK.
