Three individuals required hospitalization early Saturday morning after their small plane crashed in the yard of a Brookhaven neighborhood. According to FOX 5 Atlanta, the incident took place around 12:25 a.m. near Clairmont Road and 9th Street, in close proximity to Peachtree-DeKalb Airport.
Despite the violent nature of the crash, the occupants were reportedly conscious and alert when taken to Grady Memorial Hospital, with injuries including a broken wrist and a broken ankle as reported by Atlanta News First. Local police forces and the DeKalb County Fire Department responded to the scene, swiftly managing the situation as emergency services always ready with their training when the unexpected strikes.
The craft, a Piper PA-28-151 Cherokee Warrior owned by All2Fly Flight School, was on a training flight that included several "touch-and-go" landings, which are standard for flight practice. According to flight data, the plane attempted to return to Peachtree-DeKalb Airport from Richard B. Russell Regional Airport in Rome but went off course, striking trees and power lines before crashing. No damage to any residences has been reported, and earlier power outages were promptly resolved by Georgia Power.
In a show of community concern, DeKalb County CEO Lorraine Cochran-Johnson conveyed her sympathies, stating, "I am grateful for the swift actions of our first responders and the patience of residents impacted by the crash," according to quotes obtained by Atlanta News First. She pledged continued support for the ongoing thorough and respectful investigation. Eager to see the investigation concluded, The National Transportation Safety Board has been summoned to conduct their inquiry on the plane, which has since been extracted and moved to a facility in Griffin by ATL Air Recovery for further analysis.
With the investigation in its infancy, further details are expected to be revealed as the National Transportation Safety Board delves into the incident's specifics. All2fly Aviation Academy, when reached out by Atlanta News First, has yet to comment on the crash involving one of their aircraft.
