Markell Reeves, 40, stands accused of a fatal vehicular ordeal that resulted in the death of a 45-year-old woman and left several others injured in Woodlawn last year. The South Shore man faces severe charges, including first-degree murder and attempted murder, as per court documents. The tragic incident unfolded in May 2024, when Reeves, driving a red Ford Expedition, collided with a silver Volkswagen operated by a 28-year-old woman, according to information from The Chicago Sun-Times.
The two, after the initial mishap, made an arrangement to visit the local police station to report the accident. However, en route to make the report, chaos ensued. Reeves allegedly initiated a second collision with the Volkswagen, an event that has been described as the starting point of a harrowing pursuit stemming from South Shore Drive to Cottage Grove Avenue, as reported by the Chicago Sun-Times. During the subsequent chase, Reeves is said to have rear-ended the Volkswagen multiple times before ultimately careening into the Chevy SUV, fatally injuring its driver, Damica Nickerson.
Prosecutors, detailing the intensity of the event, disclosed that the situation escalated when Reeves repeatedly followed and crashed into the woman's car before both vehicles lost control. Nickerson was pronounced dead at the scene of the final, devastating collision. The passenger in Nickerson's vehicle, a 46-year-old woman, was left with serious injuries that required surgery. "After the crash, Reeves and the woman, 28, pulled into a parking area to exchange information and call 911," The Chicago Sun-Times reported, underlining the attempts to resolve the situation, which tragically escalated.
Reeves was eventually arrested in south suburban Lansing, as pointed out by ABC 7 Chicago, fifteen months subsequent to the Woodlawn incident. Alongside the murder and attempted murder allegations, he has been charged with aggravated battery. According to prosecutors, Reeves attempted to justify his actions by claiming he was making a U-turn when he collided with Nickerson's vehicle, a narrative seemingly contradicted by surveillance footage purportedly showing the chase and multiple impacts with the woman's Volkswagen before the fatal crash.
He is due back in court on Aug. 26, as fierce debate swirls around the circumstances that transformed a minor incident into an egregious act of violence, forever altering the lives touched by this calamitous chain of events.
