Residents and stakeholders in St. Augustine Beach are set to receive an important update from St. Johns County Coastal Management staff during the City Commission meeting scheduled for September 4. The topic on deck is the advancement of the St. Johns County Shore Protection Project, an initiative critical to maintaining the coastal front of the area against the relentless forces of nature. St. Johns County County officials are looking to secure perpetual easements, which are crucial for ongoing beach nourishment and protective measures.
In partnership with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, St. Johns County has been a steward of the Shore Protection Project, tasked to safeguard local infrastructure and ensure the coastal community’s resilience during storm events. Having struggled against the surging tides, these beaches are more than leisurely escapes—they are bulwarks warding off the creeping sea, a fact all-too-understood by local authorities. The County now seeks the City's approval to grant easements for properties it owns, opening the doors to sand placement and other protective endeavors.
The public and interested parties can catch the presentation in real-time, engraved into the calendar at 6 p.m. at City Hall, located at 2200 A1A South, St. Augustine Beach. For those who can’t attend in person, there is still the chance to be a part of the audience electronically. The meeting, wherein the fate of the community's coastline might well be decided, will also be streamed on the City of St. Augustine Beach YouTube channel.
