A traffic accident in Sterling Heights left one person seriously injured and led to the temporary closure of part of Canal Road. Police said a 2012 Chevrolet SUV struck the individual around 5:35 a.m. at the intersection of Canal Road and Delco Boulevard, according to The Detroit News.

The victim was taken to a local hospital with life-threatening injuries. Sterling Heights Police investigated the crash and reopened the road after about three hours. The SUV driver stopped and is cooperating with police. A statement obtained by Audacy said the vehicle had front-end damage and debris was left on the road.

This incident is part of a recent rise in pedestrian-involved accidents in the region. Transportation expert Alex Bourgeau told The Detroit News, "(Pedestrian-involved crashes) are a very small portion, but they're significant because they're exposed. There's no protection." He noted that solutions may include roadway design improvements and greater caution at intersections.

Sterling Heights Police are asking witnesses or anyone with information about the accident to contact the department’s Traffic Safety Bureau. Khamo Law, PLLC stated in a blog post, “Our team is dedicated to helping accident victims seek compensation for the damages they have suffered due to another party’s negligence.”
