A road closure has been enacted in the Stone Mountain area following a significant roadway collapse on Stonegate Industrial Boulevard. DeKalb County officials have advised the public to steer clear of the area near East Ponce de Leon Avenue and North Hairston Road, with the exact location being at 4589 Stonegate Industrial Blvd. The cause of the collapse is still under investigation, and the timeline for repairs has yet to be officially released, as reported by FOX 5 Atlanta.
Efforts to resolve the situation are already underway, with a contractor called in to assess the extent of the damage. According to Decaturish, a creek located directly beneath the roadway has been exposed by an eight-foot wide, twenty-foot deep hole. The contractor's appraisal suggests that to permanently fix, they must remove several trees and work with Georgia Power for a comprehensive repair strategy.
The Department of Public Works Roads and Drainage Division is working to both provide an accurate assessment and to coordinate the repair efforts needed to mitigate the damage and restore the thoroughfare to its full capacity. The lack of details regarding the cause highlights the sometimes unpredictable nature of infrastructure wear and incidents within our city's framework.
Concerning how long the road will be impassable, one anonymous crew member hinted to Decaturish that the repairs "could take a month." A lengthy process clearly is expected, factoring in assessment, planning, and actual construction work that needs to be done in the affected area. Further updates will be rolled out as the county advances with the repair work and more information becomes available.
