In the heart of Nashville, a worrying trend continues to surface. Official reports indicate that most firearms are being reported stolen directly from parked vehicles, urging local police to call for heightened security measures by residents. The Nashville Metro Police Department (MNPD) reinforces its message to locals: lock your car doors, secure your valuables, guns in particular, and remove the keys to prevent theft.
With data revealing a total of 625 guns lifted from vehicles just this year in the city, the incidents are not isolated―22 firearms were nabbed from automobiles last week alone, taking the year's tally of all guns stolen in Davidson County to an alarming 843, which means a stunning 74% of these were swiped from automotive confines. The previous year painted a slightly less worrying picture at this point, with 585 guns reported stolen from vehicles; the MNPD highlights the uptick and the concern in vehicles playing unintentional armories on wheels.
The prevalence of these vehicular thefts intertwines with broader criminal activities. The MNPD outlines how stolen cars, in cahoots with the stolen firearms within them, are often the ghost drivers behind further offences, including carjackings and a slew of robberies.
