Mount Vernon, N.Y. became the focus of a police investigation yesterday morning after a woman was found dead inside her car on the shoulder of the Cross County Parkway. Westchester County Police are investigating the death as suspicious and possibly related to targeted violence, according to CBS News New York.
A report of a disabled vehicle near the Broad Street exit around 8 a.m. prompted a police response. Upon arrival, officers found the woman deceased in the driver’s seat. Her name was withheld pending family notification, and Westchester News 12 noted that fresh damage on her "fairly new car" suggested possible criminal activity. Westchester County Police Chief of Department James Luciano indicated there were signs she may have been a victim of gun violence but did not provide additional details due to the ongoing investigation.
The body was subsequently removed by the Westchester County Medical Examiner's Office, which will carry out an autopsy to conclusively determine the cause of death. Despite the discovery, Chief Luciano reassured the public that there appears to be no immediate threat to the community at large.
As the investigation into the details of the crime continues, the Cross County Parkway—stretching from the Saw Mill River Parkway in Yonkers to the Hutchinson River Parkway in Mount Vernon—remains a focus area. Police investigators are expected to stay active in the vicinity as they work to reconstruct the events leading to the incident. "There was some kind of criminal activity that had taken place," Luciano told Westchester News 12.
