The Tennessee Department of Mental Health and Substance Abuse Services has once again opened its doors to applications for the Pathways Behavioral Health Scholarship program.
Designed to combat workforce shortages in behavioral health professions, the scholarship offers up to $30,000 over a two-year period for master's degree students in relevant fields. A commitment is required from recipients to work for a community-based agency that contracts with the department, equal to the time of scholarship support received. According to the Tennessee Department of Mental Health and Substance Abuse Services, the program helps foster new careers in critical areas like counseling, psychiatric nursing, and social work.
The state of Tennessee has displayed a robust backing for the program, investing over $10.3 million in the past two years. After the program's launch in March 2024, which saw an overwhelming number of applicants, additional funding was procured, including $2 million from the Tennessee Opioid Abatement Council for this second wave of applications. "We’ve heard so many stories from scholarship recipients who have told us this support has enabled them to pursue their dream careers," TDMHSAS Commissioner Marie Williams, LCSW, told the original publication by the Tennessee Department of Mental Health and Substance Abuse Services.
Dr. Steve Loyd of the Tennessee Opioid Abatement Council expressed the council's enthusiasm for backing the initiative, given its alignment with their goals to mitigate the repercussions of the opioid crisis in Tennessee. The scholarship program stands as a testament to the state's commitment to improving mental health services and addressing the deep-seated issues caused by substance abuse.
Interested parties are encouraged to take advantage of this educational opportunity. More information and the application for the scholarship can be found at the Tennessee Department of Mental Health and Substance Abuse Services website.
