The Tennessee State University's New Direction Gospel Choir recently made a splash at the 40th Annual Stellar Gospel Music Awards, held in Nashville's Schermerhorn Symphony Center on August 16. Highlighted as an Emerging Artist, the TSU ensemble offered a moving performance of “I’m Saved,” a nod to their prowess in blending traditional gospel with modern fervor.
Members of the choir, which is a prominent figure on the TSU campus, were elated at the opportunity to shine on such a stage. In an interview with TSU Newsroom, Jace Lightfoot, a public health student, expressed the surreal nature of the moment, saying, "This is amazing, and a dream come true." On the heels of their performance, the choir, singing from the heart, connected with the audience in a display of their vibrant energy, which they are known for.
Serenity Bond, hailing from Memphis, Tennessee, shared her thoughts on how the choir's involvement at such a high level brings visibility to other HBCU choirs via TSU Newsroom. She said, "New Direction felt like home and helped me grow in my relationship with God." She underscored the importance of participation as a senior public health major. The choir didn’t just perform; it ministered to the souls in attendance, sharing the stage in the past with the likes of Ricky Dillard and Pastor Mike Jr. at the Dove Awards. Myles Witcher, a senior biology major, emphasized the choir's broader mission to minister through music.
The choir, under the direction of Choir Master Justin Butler, has recently won the 2025 How Sweet the Sound national gospel choir competition, adding $11,000 to their accolades, including a People’s Choice Award. "Our mission is to spread joy and inspiration through music, connecting with audiences on a deeper level," Butler said, reflecting on their accomplishments and the effort behind their music, according to a statement obtained by TSU Newsroom.
Gospel music aficionados are set to witness the choir's stellar performance when the 40th Annual Stellar Gospel Music Awards premieres on Saturday at 8 p.m. on the Stellar Network, with a subsequent broadcast on BET the next day.
