A three-alarm fire struck the Mapunapuna industrial district on Thursday, continuing a troubling pattern of major blazes that have plagued the area over recent years. The incident prompted a substantial emergency response from Honolulu Fire Department crews who have become increasingly familiar with responding to significant structure fires in this industrial neighborhood.
The latest fire adds to a growing list of incidents along streets like Ahua Street, Kakoi Street, and Kilihau Street. According to the Honolulu Fire Department, a two-alarm warehouse fire occurred in February 2023 near what was initially reported as 685 Ahua Street but was later determined to be at 650 Kakoi Street. The fire was brought under control at 6:27 p.m. and extinguished at 7:40 p.m.
Recent Incidents in the Area
Just this past May, HFD responded to what was initially reported as a building fire at 664 Kakoi Street at 10:20 a.m., though as reported by KITV, the incident was later downgraded to a vehicle fire. Firefighters responded at approximately 10:24 a.m. to address the situation.
In March 2023, KHON2 reported that HFD responded to a building fire near 2706 Kilihau Street around 6:41 p.m., which was later classified as arson in the first degree by Honolulu police and firefighters.
Major Historical Damage
The area has experienced devastating fires over the years, with one of the most significant occurring in October 2015. According to the Honolulu Star-Advertiser, that fire caused an estimated $5.5 million in damages to businesses, with ABC Supply Co. at 749 Mapunapuna Street sustaining damages of $5.45 million. The blaze required approximately 70 firefighters and took about three hours to bring under control, with full extinguishment not achieved until nearly 21 hours after it began.
The industrial district's unique challenges have been evident in past incidents. As detailed by the Star-Advertiser, the February 2023 warehouse fire involved a building where people lived, with five out of six occupants accounted for at the scene. HFD conducted multiple searches despite questionable structural integrity of the building's second-floor mezzanine space.
Heightened Fire Risk Environment
Thursday's incident comes during a period of elevated fire danger conditions. Earlier this week, per Governor Josh Green's office, the Hawaii Emergency Management Agency issued alerts regarding red flag warning conditions and extreme fire danger, underscoring the heightened risk environment firefighters have been operating in.
The cause and origin of Thursday's three-alarm fire will be subject to investigation. As noted by the Honolulu Fire Department in previous incidents, further investigation to determine origin, cause, and damage estimates are standard procedure, with updates provided once final investigation reports are completed.
