A third victim has succumbed to injuries sustained in a house fire earlier this week in Streamwood, northwest suburban Chicago. The Cook County Medical Examiner's Office confirmed the death of Jacolyn Wians, aged 63, bringing the tragic toll to three members from the same family. Earlier, authorities had identified the other victims as 74-year-old Dale Wians and their son, 29-year-old Brandon Wians, as reported by WGN-TV.
The fire brigade responded to the emergency in the 1200 block of North Green Meadows Boulevard around 1:15 a.m. Tuesday. Upon arrival, the first engine company discovered a sizeable fire in a two-story house's basement, which they subsequently extinguished. In the rescue attempts that followed, three individuals were pulled from the home. Despite life-saving efforts by paramedics, two family members died soon after the incident, with Jacolyn Wians passing away later in critical condition, as confirmed by ABC7 Chicago.
The village officials noted that preliminary investigations pointed to a utility closet in the basement as the fire's source. The Wians family, having lived in the home for decades, was well-known in their community. Neighbors described them as friendly and devoted parents, especially to their adult son Brandon, who used a wheelchair due to special needs. "We are sad because we see these neighbors every couple days, walking around, taking their morning walks," neighborhood resident Abel Escobar told ABC7 Chicago. "But it's heartbreaking because it could happen to anybody."
As members of the small community of Streamwood grapple with the loss, the fire continues to serve as a grim reminder of the vulnerabilities that lie within even the most seemingly safe of havens. The Wians, known for their friendly nature and closeness as a family, leave behind a neighborhood in mourning – a collective grieving the erasure of a family unit that once was an integral part of the fabric binding them together, according to residents speaking with WGN-TV.
