A fatal accident shook the community of Mountain Green when a glider pilot crashed into Mahogany Mountain, triggering both a personal and environmental crisis. As reported by KUTV, the incident occurred on Friday around 2 p.m., above the Bohmann Ranch, resulting in the pilot's death and igniting a fire at approximately 7,000 feet elevation. Fire crews faced a dual challenge: the retrieval of the pilot and battling the blaze that ensued.
According to details provided by a KSL report, Morgan County Fire Warden Dave Vickers called for a full wildland fire response to combat the flames. Federal resources, including the U.S. Forest Service Helitack team stationed at the nearby airport, were dispatched to the scene. The Helitack crew was vital in confirming the crash site, while fire management teams managed to contain the wildfire to a spread of about three acres.
Amidst this tragedy, firefighters also faced a logistical setback when one of their Brush Trucks, 131, incurred a damaged tire and undercarriage while descending from an already perilous terrain. "Firefighters worked until 1:30 a.m.," battling not only the flames but also the physical and mechanical toll of the operation, as detailed by KUTV. The difficulty was accentuated by the need to tow the damaged vehicle down the mountain, which took several laborious hours.
The pilot, whose identity has not been released to the public, was determined deceased at the crash scene. Recovery efforts were supported by the Utah Department of Public Safety, which assisted in retrieving the body, FOX13 reported. The swift response from various fire departments and assistance by state and federal agencies prevented what could have been a more extensive wildfire.
