Earlier today, New York's streets saw a string of tragedies, with three separate vehicular collisions resulting in two fatalities and several critical injuries, including one involving a teenager. In Brooklyn, around 12:30 a.m., a 22-year-old man was killed after losing control of his vehicle on the Belt Parkway near the Knapp Street exit, according to Gothamist.
The driver was ejected from the 2019 Lexus after it overturned multiple times, and despite being taken to NYU Langone Hospital Brooklyn, he later succumbed to his injuries. Three passengers were also in the car: a 20-year-old man suffered to sustain a broken leg, another 22-year-old man with minor injuries, and a third passenger with two broken legs. They were reported to be in stable condition according to police statements. The News 12 Brooklyn added that witnesses described seeing the Lexus speeding before losing control. "The car looked like it got a blowout, and it flipped and went into a tree," a witness told News 12 Brooklyn. The same witness recounted that "The guy was bleeding out and they gave him a blanket."
Mere minutes later, another disaster unfolded on Staten Island, where a 13-year-old boy riding a motorized scooter was hit by an MTA bus. The teen sustained serious head injuries at the intersection of Castleton Avenue and Park Avenue. He was promptly taken to Richmond University Medical Center in critical condition. According to authorities, the 69-year-old bus driver involved in the accident remained at the scene, with no arrests immediately made as the investigation continued.
Finally, in yet another part of Brooklyn, a collision around 4 a.m. at the intersection of Strauss Street and Pitkin Avenue in Brownsville resulted in more sorrow. A 35-year-old man's Ford Fusion collided with a 29-year-old man on a moped. The younger man was ejected upon impact and later pronounced dead at Brookdale Hospital. The driver of the Ford Fusion was taken into custody at the scene with charges pending. Both involved parties were traveling westbound on Pitkin Avenue when the accident occurred, the NYPD is still unraveling to determine the cause of the crash.
