Last night, the Falmouth community experienced a significant structural fire that left two firefighters and one resident hospitalized. According to a social media post from Falmouth Fire/Rescue, the incident occurred around 8:00 pm on Plum Hollow Road in East Falmouth.
The response team, led by Engine 20 from Hatchville Station 6, encountered "heavy smoke and fire upon approach to the scene." Battling the blaze took a concerted effort, with firefighters advancing an attack line to the rear of the structure to suppress what was described as the "heaviest fire." Despite the intense heat and smoke, the team managed to safely evacuate all occupants, including the family's dogs.
An exhaustive overhaul was necessary following the initial takedown of the flames to ensure the complete extinguishment of the fire. The damage to the building, however, is reported to be extensive. In the course of the event, two firefighters were transported to the hospital with injuries described as non-life-threatening. They were joined by a civilian who sustained injuries under similar conditions.
The community's respect and appreciation for the firefighters' commitment to public safety were evident as mutual aid partners were thanked for their assistance during the crisis. Having provided both on-the-scene support and town-wide coverage, their role proved fundamental to the operation's overall success.
The cause of the fire remains unknown at this time, with the Falmouth Fire Rescue Fire Investigation Unit leading the ongoing investigation.
