Today, an unusual incident occurred when two Fort Lauderdale police vehicles collided on Las Olas Boulevard. According to information from the Fort Lauderdale Police Department, the incident took place shortly after 3:30 a.m. in the vicinity of the 1100 block of West Las Olas Boulevard, near the Westside Market. One of the police vehicles was left charred after catching fire, while the second vehicle careened into a nearby pole, as reported by Local 10 News.
The collision resulted in extensive damage not only to the police vehicles but also to the surrounding area, where several trees were downed and uprooted. Despite the early hour and the potential danger posed by such a fiery crash, no pedestrians were injured. "It looks like it’s bad," was a sentiment shared by a store owner who spoke to Local 10 News. Both officers involved in the incident were transported to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, as noted by WSVN. An official inquiry is underway to understand the events that led to this unusual occurrence, although it remains unknown if the officers were en route to a call at the time of the accident.
Fort Lauderdale Fire Rescue teams responded swiftly to the scene, ensuring both officers were treated and transported to the hospital. The badly burned police SUV was later removed from outside the Westside Market, where it had come to rest after the collision. Meanwhile, a clean-up operation is in progress at the market, which has been temporarily closed due to the incident.
The owner of the corner store, who preferred to keep her identity private, reflected a broader concern that goes beyond property and infrastructure. "I hope the police officer is OK,” she told Local 10 News.
