Montgomery has extended its gratitude to a U.S. Coast Guard veteran, Michael Downey, who dedicated his time to preserving the memory of fellow servicemembers at Hopewell Cemetery. Downey, a member of American Legion Post 630, made his way from Michigan to clean veterans' headstones, an act that goes beyond simple maintenance, it's a tribute to those who served.
According to a recent publication by the City of Montgomery, Downey cleaned 25 headstones over the span of two days on July 28 and 29. His efforts focused on Section 1, Fraction 1, and Fraction 2 of the cemetery. While not a local, Downey has continued to be an active participant in the Montgomery community through the American Legion and by his annual tradition of placing flags on veterans' graves each Veterans Day.
The task of cleaning the headstones is more than just a cosmetic touch-up, it's a restoration of honor to those who have served. Downey, inspired by his similar efforts back home in Michigan, saw a need and acted to ensure that the legacies of the veterans are kept visible and venerated. His hands-on approach involved bringing his own pressure-washing equipment all the way to Montgomery to assist in the rejuvenation of the cemetery's aged markers.
