The University of Miami community is calling for action in response to disturbing incidents involving a popular duck on campus known as Ivan. According to a report by 7News, a five-second video shows a man, believed to be a campus employee, kicking the duck, sparking outrage amongst students.
Alexa Wood, a member of the campus animal advocacy organization UPurr, described the incident to 7News: "The guy turns around and punts it, kicks it and the duck goes away." Initially seen on social media last Friday, the man in question appears to be wearing a lanyard with an employee ID, which has led students to believe he works for the university. Known for his friendly disposition and frequent interaction with students sparks, Ivan had become an endearing figure among the campus community.
Additionally, as reported by the university's student newspaper and shared by @themiamihurricane on Instagram, a second photograph surfaced showing somebody grabbing a duck, potentially Ivan, by the wings. The condition of the duck in the photo is presently unclear, but the events have led to an investigation by the University of Miami Police Department, according to Miami New Times.
In the wake of these events, the University of Miami released a statement asserting that "The University of Miami Police Department, the Department of Facilities and Operations and Human Resources are investigating the two incidents and taking appropriate action. Harming wildlife is a criminal offense and perpetrators will be prosecuted." These incidents have struck a chord with students, who have grown attached to Ivan, known to seek out snacks and company from his human counterparts. After the release of the video, the search for the duck and the call for justice by students on campus continue to intensify, as noted by 7News.
