Entrepreneur Vinit Chaudhary is taking his family tradition of business into the realm of sustainable materials, as reported by Oak Ridge National Laboratory. Chaudhary, founder of Elemental Composites and part of Innovation Crossroads' 2024 cohort, is leveraging his background in mechanical engineering from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, to develop biodegradable natural fiber composites aimed at creating new markets and reducing environmental waste.
The challenge for most startups is significant, with a large swath never seeing a positive return on investment; however, the Innovation Crossroads program, part of the Department of Energy Lab-Embedded Entrepreneurship Program at ORNL, is aiming to tilt the odds in their favor, providing entrepreneur-fellows like Chaudhary with access to top-tier researchers, scientific resources, and essential business training links to help navigate the competitive market successfully.
In his collaboration with ORNL researcher Soydan Ozcan and Uday Vaidya, UT-ORN’L Governor's Chair in Composite Manufacturing, Chaudhary's venture is brushing up against the common constraints of natural fibers, which often suffer from issues like poor adhesion due to their hydrophilic nature, according to Chaudhary in a statement obtained by Oak Ridge National Laboratory.
The dual process at the core of Elemental Composites involves modifying fiber surfaces to bond well with resins, followed by a manufacturing technique that seeks to create high-performance composites suitable for robust applications, echoing what Chaudhary told Oak Ridge National Laboratory, "Our goal is to functionalize these natural fibers for more high-performance composites and eventually match the performance of existing composites like fiberglass."
Chaudhary's vision for Elemental Composites goes beyond mere product development, as he aims to open the company’s first manufacturing plant in East Tennessee, exploiting the collaborative tech ecosystem of Knoxville to scale his innovative work, a location that provides not only expert insight into composite materials but also valuable opportunities for partnership and growth, supporting his ambition to pioneer the sector of natural fiber composites.
