Fall in Utah isn't just about the changing leaves; it's also the season to witness the dramatic transformation of kokanee salmon as they shift from their typical silver to a vivid red for spawning. The Utah Division of Wildlife Resources (DWR) is hosting free public events and has shared several locations where visitors can observe this natural phenomenon.
From Sept. 10 to Nov. 30, catching kokanee salmon is prohibited in Utah to protect the species during their spawning season. As obtained by the Utah Division of Wildlife Resources, Michael Packer, DWR Central Region Outreach Manager, emphasized the importance of not disturbing the fish. Visitors are advised against entering the waters, picking up the fish, or allowing dogs to chase after them, as such actions can result in citations.
The main event is set for September 20 at Strawberry Reservoir, where, according to the Utah Division of Wildlife Resources, interested parties "will be able to see a few salmon in the Strawberry River next to the visitor center. But if you walk to the fish trap and egg-taking facility behind the visitor center, you'll see hundreds of the bright red fish. DWR biologists will be present to discuss the salmon's peculiar life cycle. Additionally, a new kokanee salmon mural will be unveiled as part of the Wildlife Walls project." Event registration is available on Eventbrite, and overflow parking is provided near the visitor center for convenience.
Other notable spots for salmon-viewing include Fish Lake in Sevier County, Causey Reservoir in Weber County, and Sheep Creek in Daggett County. The DWR also highlighted that Flaming Gorge houses northeastern Utah's largest kokanee population and that the public can view spawning from the Highway 44 bridge over Sheep Creek. As per the Utah Division of Wildlife Resources, if visitors spot the DWR fish trap, they should avoid disturbing it since it is used to collect eggs and milt for future kokanee salmon production. The DWR encourages those who witness the spawning kokanee to tag @UtahDWR on social media for a chance to be featured on their channels.
