In a decisive triumph on the soccer field, the UTEP Miners thrashed Texas Southern with a 4-0 scoreline at University Field this past Sunday. The Miners, now holding a 1-1 record, dominated their opponents throughout the game, as evident by the lopsided shooting statistics, 23-9 in shots, 9-3 in shots on target, and leading corner kicks at 7-3. Crucially, UTEP's sophomore Anita Quintero bagged a brace with goals in the 20th and 61st minutes, respectively.
The match saw standout performances from several Miners. Freshman Yesenia Cisneros marked her first career goal and assist, a notable achievement for the newcomer. A collective effort was visible with assists from freshman Ava Grosso, sophomore Ashlee Mora, and redshirt-senior Hayden McMillan, according to UTEP Athletics. Even with two game delays, one due to an injury and another because of lightning, the team maintained composure, a quality that impressed UTEP head coach Gibbs Keeton, who praised the team's focus and efficiency following the interruptions.
Under the opposition's goal, Alessandra Bastidas of Texas Southern had a busy evening, fending off a barrage of attacks and ending the match with five saves despite the loss. UTEP's initial surge set the tone early on, with three shots taken within the first five minutes, exemplifying their aggressive playstyle. The defense was equally tenacious, effectively snuffing out threats, including a crucial shot blocked away by the Miners in the first half.
Particular attention was given to UTEP's freshmen, like goalkeeper Savanah Finley, who delivered three saves to earn a clean sheet, the first for a UTEP freshman GK since 2021. "It's good when you put the ball in the back of the net. This team's been craving to do that, and we knew if we scored one that we'd score multiple goals," Keeton told UTEP Athletics. The coach underscored the importance of seizing opportunities after stoppages and generating scoring chances.
The Miners are scheduled to face more challenges ahead as they head to California for their next two matches. The first is set for a face-off with UCR at 7:30 p.m. PT on a Thursday, followed by a contest against Cal State Fullerton the subsequent Monday at 5 p.m. PT.
