After nearly nine months of investigation into the death of a five-year-old White Pine girl, Aurora Grace Hurst, local police have arrested her parents. William Nicholas Sipple and Shirley Ann Hurst were taken into custody on charges of aggravated child abuse, as confirmed by a statement from the White Pine Police Department.
The tragic incident, which took place on November 19, 2024, on Harrison Road, shocked the local community. The child was found dead in her home, leading to an intensive investigation that recently concluded, with a grand jury indicting the parents. The charges brought against the couple are backed by "Haley's Law," named after Haley Spicer, which imposes stricter penalties for child abuse cases involving victims under the age of nine, according to a report by WATE.
The two were arrested by officers from the White Pine Police Department on Thursday, Aug. 14, as detailed by WVLT. Reflecting on the lengthy investigative process that led to the couple's arrest, White Pine Police Chief Chad Cotter expressed his appreciation for the dedication of his team. "I would like to thank the hard work of Lt. Paul Lowe, the Department of Children’s Services, the District Attorney’s Office, and the officers of the White Pine Police Department. Their dedication and persistence in this case have been instrumental in bringing charges against those responsible," he stated to WBIR.
The details surrounding the circumstances of Aurora Grace Hurst's death are still under wraps as the investigation continues, and the parents are due for trial. Community members, still reeling from the impact of such a heinous incident occurring within their neighborhood, look to the upcoming court proceedings for closure and justice. Police officials have reiterated their commitment to thoroughness in the pursuit of the truth, ensuring that those responsible are held accountable for their actions.
