A tragic outcome from a local sale turned deadly when Gabriela Ochoa, 31, was shot in the Bridgeport neighborhood of Chicago. During the attempted robbery, Ochoa succumbed to a gunshot wound sustained on Saturday night. According to NBC Chicago, the Chicago Police Department reported that the incident occurred at approximately 8:40 p.m. along West 27th Street near South Halsted Street, where a male suspect in a dark-colored sedan opened fire on Ochoa.
Details provided by a witness in a Chicago Sun-Times interview painted a harrowing picture of the events. Ochoa had accompanied her nephew for a sale of two hoodies arranged through the app OfferUp, hoping to provide safety for the transaction. The plan went awry when they approached the gray, Tesla Model X, and a discussion over payment methods precipitated violence from one of the vehicle's occupants. "Give me your stuff," commanded an individual from the Tesla, moments before the shooting began.
Ochoa, who held a concealed carry license, attempted to defend herself and her nephew but was struck when her firearm jammed, as told by the witness to the Chicago Sun-Times. Amidst the chaos that followed, Ochoa was rushed to Stroger Hospital where she was later pronounced dead. The Cook County Medical Examiner's Office confirmed Ochoa's identity and police have revealed that multiple suspects could have been involved in the attempt to rob her.
No arrests had been made as of late Sunday, with the authorities continuing their investigation into the robbery and fatal shooting. The community is left to grapple with the senseless loss of life over an encounter that began as a simple exchange of goods. The witness, in recollection of the shocking events to the Chicago Sun-Times, expressed the trauma of the moment, "I was just scared and shocked," he said. "I keep replaying it in my head."
Three shell casings were recovered from the scene. However, as of yet, the suspects remain at large, and the investigation continues. Anyone with information related to the crime is encouraged to come forward and reach out to the Chicago Police Department as they work to bring closure to this tragic case and seek justice for Gabriela Ochoa.
