Woodstock officials marked a new beginning for outdoor recreation in the city with the groundbreaking ceremony of Little River Park. Mayor Michael Caldwell, together with Council Member Brian Wolfe and other city dwellers, plunged shovels into the earth, signaling the launch of the much-anticipated project. Mayor Caldwell stressed the park's significance, stating, "This is a gift for my children, for your children, and for their children’s children. How often do we get to give something like this to generations in the future?" as reported by Woodstock's official news.
Widely supported by an overwhelming majority, the construction of the park was greenlit through a parks bond referendum with 87% approval in 2023, a testament to the community's commitment to environmental stewardship, the creation of Little River Park has been touted not just as an investment in public amenities but also as a legacy commitment with Mayor Caldwell remarking on the intergenerational gift that such a development represents.
The new 110-acre recreational haven, set to double the city's greenspace, is strategically placed stretching from Trickum Road to the Woodlands subdivision, Little River Park will offer not just trails but also a fishing and paddling lake, and a water trail, all designed for community enjoyment and to enhance the area’s natural beauty. The city's residents influenced the park's blueprint through their input, and City Council Member Brian Wolfe acknowledged this collaborative effort by saying, "Their public input truly helped develop the concept and the idea behind what we are building here," as noted by the city's announcement.
Improvements to the city infrastructure are moving in tandem with the park's construction, Trickum Road will see a new roundabout at the future main entrance of the park, easing access while maintaining traffic flow, Little River Park is being sculpted as a focal point for outdoor recreation and family-friendly activities, including playgrounds and dynamic outdoor programming that will embellish the city's existing offerings. Details about the park's progress can be tracked at Woodstock's Parks Bond website.
