Early Sunday morning, tragedy struck in Chicago's East Side neighborhood where a 20-year-old man was discovered fatally shot in a crashed vehicle. Fox 32 Chicago reports that the incident occurred in the 10100 block of S. Avenue M shortly after midnight. Chicago Police Department officers responded to the crash site to find a silver SUV overturned on its side, having collided with several parked vehicles.
The young man found inside the SUV was unresponsive, and upon inspection, officers noticed he had suffered a gunshot wound to the head. Despite being quickly transported to the University of Chicago Medical Center, he succumbed to his injuries. As of now, no suspects have been taken into custody; a weapon was, however, found at the scene. There were no other reported injuries from the crash itself. Chicago police disclosed no further details about this ongoing investigation, as area detectives work to uncover the circumstances surrounding this violent incident.
In a related development covered by WGN-TV, a 20-year-old woman also suffered a gunshot wound to the leg around the same time and location. She has been treated at an area hospital and is reported to be in good condition, according to the police statement. Investigators are working to determine if the two shootings are connected and what events led up to the violent outcomes.
The recovered weapon at the crash scene could prove to be a key piece of evidence in understanding the sequence of events that led to the young man's death and potentially to the shooting of the young woman. The community awaits answers as the probe into the incident continues. Meanwhile, the identities of both victims have not yet been released to the public, as authorities notify next of kin.
