The troubling trend of firearms theft from vehicles in Nashville continues to escalate, with an alarming number of guns stolen this year reported by the Metropolitan Nashville Police Department (MNPD). According to an official release from the MNPD, a staggering 74% of the 865 guns reported stolen in Davidson County in 2025 were lifted from automobiles, highlighting an urgent need for vehicle owners to reassess their storage habits.
With a total of 646 firearms taken from vehicles alone, the pervasive issue of gun thefts in Nashville is not a matter to be taken lightly; last week alone, 19 firearms were swiped from cars, continuing a perilous pattern that not only contributes to the circulation of illegal firearms but also poses an acute threat to public safety. The preceding year at the same juncture had seen a lower but still worrisome count of 604 guns stolen from vehicles.
These unsettling statistics from the MNPD underscore a critical point: the necessity for Nashvillians to practice vigilance in safeguarding their valuables, the police strongly urge citizens to lock their automobile doors and remove keys, to avoid becoming an easy target for opportunistic criminals who're looking to capitalize on unsecured guns; such negligent storage of firearms also invariably traces back to a myriad of crimes including carjackings and robberies.
