In a move designed to tackle the pressing teacher shortage in Arizona, State Superintendent Tom Horne has launched the Arizona Teacher Registered Apprenticeship Program (AZ TRAP), as detailed in a recent report by the Arizona Department of Education. This innovative initiative aims to offer a more practical route to teaching through apprenticeships, easing the financial burden on aspiring educators while providing on-the-job training and a steady paycheck during the learning process.
Describing the issue as a "crisis in Arizona," Superintendent Horne underscored the urgency of the situation, pointing out the dwindling number of teachers in the pipeline. In a statement obtained by the Arizona Department of Education, he said, "If we don’t do something major, we could end up with zero teachers." To combat this, AZ TRAP has been fashioned to not only get more teachers certified at a lower cost but also give them a chance to earn while they learn. The program has already received $1.5 million in funding from the Maricopa County Workforce Development Board for the upcoming school year in support of its apprentices.
The pilot program partners with several educational institutions, including Mesa Public Schools, Phoenix Union High School District, The Arizona Teacher Residency Program, and PLC Charter Schools, which are the employing bodies in this venture, Horne mentioned the necessity of supporting teachers bette,r specifically in terms of pay and student disciplin,e but sees the apprenticeship model as a complementary strategy.
Among the cornerstones of AZ TRAP is the "Grow Your Own Model," which allows schools to handpick and groom their future educators, undeniably this is designed to help teacher apprentices accumulate thousands of hours in real classroom settings paired with mentor teachers, a factor that Horne believes will not only cultivate teachers' skills but also, as he told the Arizona Department of Education, integrate them into the school's culture improving the retention of quality educators within Arizona's academic fabric.
